Wow, that's a cool discovery.

I was watching a nature show that showed some birds on an island who survived only on one kind of fruit. Turns out the fruit is poison to the birds and after awhile it builds up in their system and they die. Luckily, on the far side of the island there is a clay bank. There are chemicals in the clay which neutralize the poison in the fruit so the birds have fly over to the bank about once a month and fill up on clay.

It's it amazing how that works out so perfectly? The clay just happens to be there and the birds know about it. Things that make you go hmmmmm. Smile

I also have been avoiding ABs because of my fear of this. But it seems it has been for naught, I always thought they were overperscribed and I avoided them. But this is what happens. Now they have to come up with some super AB.

I agree, we are teaching the bacteria how to survive all of our ABs. It took a bit of talking, but I have even convinced the wife that antibacterial handsoap is not a good idea, and that soap and water are all that is necessary. Thus we have just soap in all the bathrooms, and at the kitchen sink.

Yet there are millions of people that still go to their doctor and DEMAND an antibacterial medication when they have a cold, which is a viral infection. OK, ignorance plays a big part here on the part of the patient, but what in hell is with all these doctors that write the Rx?

Amazing, and it doesn't come from a multi-billion dollar pharmaceutical corporation either.

The pharmaceutical companies do a lot of good, but they also do a lot of harm in their quest for higher and higher profits.

"Incentives" from "Big Drugs".

Good for you on the handsoap, SG. There are alcohol-based hand "lotions" on the market now that will destroy bacteria on your hands and it doesn't generate resistant bacteria. It just kills them.

Proper handwashing with just plain soap is a good! But if you want to kill those suckers, the alcohol-based stuff is good too. I work at a hospital and they use the alcohol-based stuff but the danged soap is antibacterial.

The docs write the scripts because the patients won't leave them alone until they do. People seem to think that if they have a viral infection (which antibiotics are useless for) they need an antibiotic.

Infections, Bacteria 'Critical For Healthy Life'

Infections, Bacteria 'Critical For Healthy Life'
"ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2007) — Mothers around the world are armed with anti-bacterial gels, sprays and baby blankets, diligently protecting their children from nasty forms of bacteria. But recent research shows that society's anti-bacterial and anti-infection crusade makes children and adults more likely to develop asthma and allergies - and perhaps even mental illnesses."

I rest my rant.

The mind is a powerful tool if you believe in it.

Hospital Superbugs Now In Nursing Homes And Community

Quote:
Hospital superbugs that can break down antibiotics are so widespread throughout Europe that doctors increasingly have to use the few remaining drugs that they reserve for emergencies. Now these hospital superbug strains have spread to nursing homes and into the community in Ireland, raising fears of wider antibiotic resistance, scientists heard 28 November 2007 at the Federation of Infection Societies Conference 2007.

Doctors collected 732 samples from 22 Irish hospitals over the last ten years and found that 61% of them, 448 samples, tested positive for bacteria that can produce an enzyme that destroys a whole family of common antibiotics including penicillins and cephalosporins. link

Not good!!
