Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica? Where do they go?

Wonder no more!!

It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird which lives an extremely ordered and complex life.

The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life, as well as maintaining a form of compassionate contact with its offspring throughout its life.

If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface other members of the family and social circle have been known to dig holes in the ice using their vestigial wings and beaks until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into and buried.

The male penguins then gather in a circle around the fresh grave and sing, "Freeze a jolly good fellow."
Invested in seeing a movie at the theater today. I say investment because $3.90 for a 12 bottle water you'd think we were buying stock. $14 and some change for a Medium Popcorn and two bottle water, really, it's a wonder more people don't go to the movies. I bought two Ribeyes from local grocer for less than that. But anyway, that's another matter.

Johnny Depp playing John Dillinger may seem like a stretch but I think he pulled it off well. I think the movie was well cast, I don't know all the actors names but there were no miscasted roles by high profile people that make you wonder what the director was thinking.

What did make me wonder what the director was thinking was why they shot the movie on digital cameras instead of film. It looked more like something you'd see from a cell phone in places with jerky framerates and blurring of the images. From what I've read a little, some movies are made on digital for the artistic value and superior night time recording. While the night shots were better, more crisp, the action was still hampered by the blurry imagery. I wish they had done it in film. And I"m not even going to get into the handheld camera work. I just don't think this type of movie works with these progressive styles of movie making.

But the acting and story make up for the problem I had, you may enjoy it more than I did.
_________________
You can't hold a liberal responsible for their words because it's character assassination.

Their solution is spelled out in newly-disclosed Amazon patent applications for On-Demand Generating E-Book Content with Advertising and Incorporating Advertising in On-Demand Generated Content. From the patent apps, here's what the future of reading may look like: 'For instance, if a restaurant is described on page 12, [then the advertising page], either on page 11 or page 13, may include advertisements about restaurants, wine, food, etc., which are related to restaurants and dining.' So, what would a delightfully-tacky-yet-unrefined Hooters ad do for your Hemingway experience?"
I was kind of eying Kindle, Amazon's electronic book. I had a chance to look at one a passenger on my airplane ride had. It looked pretty nice. I've just kind of lost my interest. If I'm going to pay that much money for the device plus pay for downloads of books, I'm darned if I'm going to put up with ads. I just lost my interest in Kindle.

The news rattles a Republican Party plagued with setbacks in recent weeks, including extramarital affairs disclosed by two other 2012 presidential prospects, Nevada Sen. John Ensign and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford.
"I'm not wanted in this state."

"How many young women work here?"

"I didn't steal it; I just borrowed it."

"You touch somebody and they call it sexual harassment!"

"I've never heard such a stupid question."

Believe it or not, the above statements weren't overhead in bars or random conversations -- they were said in job interviews.

Maybe you were nervous, you thought the employer would appreciate your honesty, or maybe you just have no boundaries. Whatever the reason, you can be certain that you shouldn't tell an interviewer that it's probably best if they don't do a background check on you. (And yes, the hiring manager remembered you said that.)

We asked hiring managers to share the craziest things they've heard from applicants in an interview. Some are laugh-out-loud hysterical, others are jaw dropping -- the majority are both. To be sure, they will relieve anyone who has ever said something unfortunate at a job interview -- and simply amuse the rest of you.

Hiring managers shared these 43 memorable interview responses:

Why did you leave your last job?

1. "I have a problem with authority." - Carrie Rocha, COO of HousingLink

Tell us about a problem you had with a co-worker and how you resolved it
2. "The resolution was we were both fired."- Jason Shindler, CEO, Curvine Web Solutions

What kind of computer software have you used?
3. "Computers? Are those the black boxes that sit on the floor next to the desks? My boss has one of those. He uses it. I don't have one. He just gives me my schedule and I follow it." - Greg Szymanski, director of human resources, Geonerco Management, Inc

What are your hobbies and interests?
4. [He said] 'Well, as you can see, I'm a young, virile man and I'm single -- if you ladies know what I'm saying.' Then he looked at one of the fair-haired board members and said, 'I particularly like blondes.'" - Petri R.J. Darby, president, darbyDarnit Public Relations

Why should we hire you?
5. "I would be a great asset to the events team because I party all the time." - Bill McGowan, founder, Clarity Media Group

11. "What is your company's policy on Monday absences?" - Campbell
14. "[The candidate asked,] 'Can my dad call you to talk about the job and the training program? Then that dad's friends called and I ended up doing a conference call with a group of concerned parents ... long story." - Bolzan
16. "When you do background checks on candidates, do things like public drunkenness arrests come up?" - Bolzan

17. "Can I get a tour of the breast pumping room? I heard you have a great one here and while I don't plan on having children for at least 10 or 12 years, I will definitely breast feed and would want to use that room."- Bolzan

18. "So, how much do they pay you for doing these interviews?" - Jodi R.R. Smith, Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting

35. "I stole some equipment from my old job, and I had to pay for its replacement." - Meistering

Have you submitted your two weeks' notice to your current employer?

36. "What is two weeks' notice? I've never quit a job before, I've always been fired." - Meistering

Random responses
37. "One guy [said] 'it would probably be best' if I didn't run a background check on him. Of course, I did, and learned all about his long, sordid past of law-breaking. Our client actually offered him a job as a staff accountant, but quickly retracted the offer when I had to tell them all about his recent arrest for a meth lab in his basement." - Charles
41. "May I have a cup of coffee? I think I may still be a little drunk from last night." - Smith
42. (During a telephone call to schedule the interview) "Can we meet next month? I am currently incarcerated." - Smith

43. "[A candidate] was asked whether he could advocate impartially on behalf of the various universities he would be representing since he had attended one of them.
Oscar-winning actor Karl Malden died today, July 1, of natural causes at the age of 97. Born Mladen Sekulovich on March 22, 1912, the bulb-nose character actor was a star of both stage and screen. Raised in Gary, Indiana, Malden briefly attended a teacher's college, then enrolled in Chicago's Goodman Theatre Dramatic School. Following World War II-era service in the Army Air Force, Malden's career took off with the role of Mitch in the 1947 Broadway production of A Streetcar Named Desire, opposite Marlon Brando....

_________________

A construction worker dangles from a crane, his arm stretched out to reach a terrified woman trapped in swirling water at the base of a dam.

These astonishing images show the dramatic rescue of the woman after her boat overturned near the dam on the Des Moines River in Iowa.

She was pulled to safety by the quick-thinking construction crew - but her husband, who was with her in the boat when it overturned yesterday, tragically drowned.

Pics at link, pretty dramatic!
_________________

You can follow people, friend them, get alerts when your friends write reviews or respond to yours, and so on. There are also free-floating discussions about product companies, and "feature" stories (blog posts) by the editors that will serve as jumping-off points for community chatter.

Keynote Systems, which provided early data on the sluggishness of news sites Thursday, released an analysis late Friday that highlighted the role of third-party content. “Our measurement data shows that for sites reported as having performance slowdowns yesterday, internal content delivered quite fast, however content that came from other sources contributed most to the site slowdowns,” said Shawn White, director of external operations at Keynote Systems. link

Sounds like they'd better get their ducks in a row then. Rock legends form new band, call it Chickenfoot
Mon Jun 29, 2009 7:23am EDT
By Mike Collett-White

LONDON (Reuters) - Some of the biggest names in rock have banded together to form a new supergroup. They call it Chickenfoot, a name they readily admit is "silly."

While the name may not be to everyone's taste, Van Halen veterans Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and virtuoso guitarist Joe Satriani rose high in the U.S. charts with their eponymous debut album this month.

"We called ourselves Chickenfoot as a kind of a joke, and people started digging it, and so Chad's going, 'Let's start a real band'," Hagar said during a boisterous interview with the band in London, where they performed during a European tour.

"Joe had a band called the Squares -- all of a sudden Chickenfoot sounded like a really good name," Hagar joked.

Hagar and Anthony used to jam together at Hagar's club in Mexico, and when Smith joined them, they gelled. Smith, who still plays for the Chili Peppers, suggested forming a group, and Satriani was invited as the final piece in the jigsaw.

The four members of Chickenfoot have sold tens of millions of records and played thousands of gigs between them over the years, but the childlike enthusiasm for their latest venture comes from starting all over again.

"We're a new band, even though we've got names, we've all been in other bands," Hagar told Reuters. "So we have to kind of let the world know who Chickenfoot is, I think."

Bass player Anthony added that he took exception to the term "supergroup."

"For me, when I hear the name supergroup I think of some pre-fab type of thing ... If the chemistry is not there you can be the best musicians, best players there are, it's not going to come out the way I think this came out.

"This was born out of friendship, it was more organic in that sense."

The band has played a series of small gigs in the United States before flying to Europe for a tour, and returns to North America winding up its travels at the end of September.

"We're a new band and when you're a new band you start and play clubs and you play to your fans," said Smith. "We're not playing stuff from Van Halen, or Joe, or Chili Peppers, we're just playing Chickenfoot."

CHART SUCCESS

Chickenfoot's debut album, released earlier in June, opened at No. 4 in the U.S. pop chart and No. 1 in the independent music chart. It maintained its position in the main chart the following week before slipping to No. 7 in the latest list.

"It's the first time I've ever been up in that territory, above the clouds," said Satriani, who is embroiled in a copyright infringement suit with British band Coldplay over its hit single "Viva La Vida."

According to band manager Mick Brigden, U.S. album sales totaled around 180,000 in the first three weeks, around one quarter of which were bought digitally, suggesting a younger, technology-savvie audience.

"A lot of times, before a record comes out, there are projections about who your audience is and where you're going to see sales, so that was a great surprise because it means that we are appealing to truly a broad audience," said Smith.

The quartet confirmed that it planned to tour and record together again in the future, although Smith would have to juggle Chickenfoot and Chili Peppers commitments.

"I am in this other group called the Red Hot Chili Peppers, great band, love 'em, nice bunch of fellas', play some good music. So I'm going to go back and do that."
a vasectomy

After having their 11th child, an Alabama couple decided that was enough, as they could not afford a larger bed.

So the husband went to his doctor and told him that he and his wife didn't want to have any more children.

The doctor told him that there was a procedure called a vasectomy that could fix the problem but that it was expensive.

A less costly alternative, said the doctor, was to go home, get a cherry bomb, light it, put it in a beer can, then hold the can up to his ear and count to 10.

The Alabamian said to the doctor, "I may not be the smartest man in the world, but I don't see how putting a cherry bomb in a beer can next to my ear is going to help me."

"Trust me," said the doctor.

So the man went home, lit a cherry bomb and put it in a beer can.

He held the can up to his ear and began to count:

"1, 2, 3, 4, 5," at which point he paused, placed the beer can

between his legs, and resumed counting on his other hand.

(This procedure also works in Tennessee, Arkansas, Virginia,
Mississippi and West Virginia.)
Is windows a virus?

No, Windows is not a virus. Here's what viruses do:

1.They replicate quickly - okay, Windows does that.

2.Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so - okay, Windows does that.

3.Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk - okay, Windows does that too.

4.Viruses are usually carried, unknown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems. - Sigh.. Windows does that, too.

5.Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too slow (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware. - Yup, Windows does that, too.

Until now it seems Windows is a virus but there are fundamental differences: Viruses are well supported by their authors, are running on most systems, their program code is fast, compact and efficient and they tend to become more sophisticated as they mature.

So Windows is not a virus.

It's a bug.
