The only dice that count are 3's and 5's. They are the only ones with pedals around the rose.

ANSWER: Dice all look the same.1,3and 5 all have a dot in the center.The 3 has 2 dots on either side of the center dot,and the 5 has 4 dots around the center dot.Johnny simply counted the number of dots around the outside. A "3" has "2" petals around the rose,or polarbears around an ice hole.The "5" has "4" petals or polarbears.
Roll some dice and it WILL become clear.

Sirwen, the "1" might count too, but it doesn't count for much does it? There is a pip in the middle, but no rose pedals or polar bears around, so it doesn't contribute any count to the total.

Good puzzle. I was trying to figure it out numerically, not by looking at the images of the dice. Doh!

RunnerBiker is right. Can't count the ones as they have no pedals. It's a big, fat zero.
