Oregon man completes flight of fancy - in lawn chair

Kent Couch lifts off from his gas station in Bend, Ore., in his lawn chair rigged with more than 150 giant party balloons, Saturday, July 5, 2008. Couch, 48, is making his third cluster balloon flight and hopes to go more than 200 miles to Idaho before running out of daylight or helium. (AP Photo/Jeff Barnard)

Saw this on the news.

Most of the time, these kind of attempts end in disaster but he made it! Whoo Hoo

I'm glad he made it too. That would be scarier than*** for me. I'd be worried about birds.

I liked the fact that he took his pellet rifle with him to shoot a few balloons if he went too high.I saw where his wife/girlfriend wanted to go on his next ride.

By the way, O, did any of the coverage you saw indicate whether this was legal to do? It is very daring and exciting, but can anyone do this with balloons, a gun, and some cajones?

I haven't read or heard of anything about the legality of it.

I guess if you want to risk your neck doing something like that it's up to you as long as you aren't causing harm to others or to the environment.

*grin* Maybe he had to file a flight plan ... who knows?

I'll bet he tries to increase his distance next time. Once you have success, you want it again, but bigger.
