New High-Capacity 64gig Flash Memory

Quote:
Samsung Electronics showed off its first 40-nanometer chip, a 32-gigabit NAND flash memory module that can be used in memory cards able to store up to 64 gigabytes of data, or 40 movies.

The latest step into smaller chip manufacturing methods brings Samsung to the forefront of chip production, putting it ahead of other manufacturers, including Intel, which has only announced chips built at 45nm. The chips are also the seventh generation of NAND flash memory to follow in a Moore's law-type theory posited by Samsung, that the company will double the capacity of NAND flash every 12 months link

Sweet!!

Bye Bye Hard-Drive, Hello Flash!!

Quote:
Manufacturers of NAND flash memory say they will expand the market for their chips over the next few years and colonize devices that now rely on hard drives or other types of memory. In turn, this could mean phones that can record several hours of video, or smaller notebooks with twice or more the battery life.

By about the turn of the decade, NAND could even replace hard drives entirely in some mini notebooks because of the increasing amount of data the chips can hold, according to Steve Appleton, CEO of Micron Technology, one of the world's largest memory makers. Flash also takes up less space and uses less energy.

"The average notebook has 30GB (of hard drive storage). How long is it before the notebook has solid state memory? Five or six years," he said. "I'm not saying drives will go away. There will always be a need for storage, but when was the last time you tapped out a drive?" link

Excellent point. I'd live to replace my mechanical drives with solid state media. If I could buy 64Gig flash sticks, I'd dump my hard drives. Shoot, 40gig goes a long way for me. A couple of those bad boyz and I'd be set.

That's all most people would need, unless they want to keep a bunch of ripped audio/video on their drive, or if they install lots of BIG games. Even then, a couple of 64Gig would handle a lot.

Wow, just think of the hardware problems those would solve. I want a few. 64 gig is way plenty AFAIC!
