Make an animated brush
You can use any pictures to make a brush or you can draw your own. It's best to use ones with transparent backgrounds. Dingbats are nice.
I used the playing card suits dingbats from the FnT Basic Shapes 1 font available here.
Get font here
I started out with solid red for the heart and the diamond and black for the club and spade. I felt the red suits didn't stand out well so I made them black too. Then in the those two layers I right-clicked and chose Alpha to selection. I shrank the selection by 1 pixel and filled that selection with red.
I started with a 300 x 300 transparent image. Font size = 150 except for the diamond which was smaller than the others and 154 seemed a good size for it. Each shape needs to be on its own layer. I renamed each layer so I could keep track of each shape.

When the shapes are done, one on each layer, use the move tool to "stack" them one on top of the other.
After they are stacked, zoom in on them so you can see well around them. Use the crop tool, adjusting the sides to come close to the stack being careful not to include any of the shapes in the cropped area. Crop.
If there is an empty background layer, delete it.
Click File/Save As. Browse to your gimp2.4/brushes folder and open it. At the top of the Save As dialog, name the file you are saving and put .gih after the name. I chose cardsuits.gih as the name for this one.
In the dialog that comes up, be sure to change the default spacing to 100, tab to the name and type what it will be called in the brushes dialog. I chose Card Suits for this one. Tab after that until you come to the Ranks and put the same number as there are cells (Cells are the layers). Save your new brush. See the image below.
Your brush is saved and ready to use. Close GIMP, re-open it and open a new image. Select the brush tool and browse for the brush.
Demo of new brush.
Download it here. Unzip into gimp2.4/brushes folder.
