English-only bill moves ahead in S.C. immigration debate
| Quote: | The S.C. Senate jumped on immigration legislation Thursday when a subcommittee approved a bill to make English the state’s official language.
Legislators’ positions were drawn along party lines during the debate with Republicans taking hard lines against illegal immigration and the lone Democrat present urging caution.
Legislators estimate there are at least 75,000 illegal, mostly Hispanic, immigrants in the state. The issue has emerged as a hot topic during the 2008 election cycle. Legislators in support of immigration laws say they are responding to voters’ complaints.
The language bill would require state and local government publications to be printed in English, including tests at S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles.
Some state documents, including school and medical forms, would be exempt because federal law requires them to be available in Spanish.
Sen. Jim Ritchie, R-Spartanburg said drivers who cannot read English are unsafe.
Sen. Chip Campsen, R-Charleston, suggested illegal immigrants would impose a dictatorship similar to Hugo Chavez’s government in Venezuela.
That style of government “is a value so foreign to our vision of government,” he said.
Scott weighed in, saying “We’re losing this country a little bit at a time.”
“They get the same benefits we get, but guess what? They don’t pay taxes,” Scott said. “To heck with that.” link |
Hope this gets passed. Looks like they had quite the debate. _________________
