I noticed an article in our local newspaper about a reception being held at our Museum in honor of cinco de mayo, why do we celebrate a Mexican National Holiday? _________________ You can't hold a liberal responsible for their words because it's character assassination.

Good question, Moon. I have no answers. When I was in grade school we were taught it was a celebration of Mexican independence, but we didn't celebrate it.
We celebrate St. Pat's day ... but that isn't because the Irish are trying to take over the US. _________________

The 5th of May is not Mexican Independence Day, but it should be! And Cinco de Mayo is not an American holiday, but it should be. Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September, 1810. And it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico.
In the U.S.A. Cinco de Mayo is kinda like valentines day or secretary's day. It is a made up event to push products and generate business. _________________ RunnerBiker ¿

Cinco de Mayo is more of an American party than a Mexican Holdiay.

I see it the same way, RB. And push and generate it does! Yet another day that many become mice pushing on the pedal..
It's so easy to get caught up in all of the marketing that bombards us.
Thanks for shining a light on it for what it is. Could be the same about other celebrated days as well.
As a general question to all of the forum: What days of the year do you feel you fall under the spell of crafty advertisers? Even if you don't want to answer here....just think about it. It surprised me when I did.

Lots and lots of them are advertizers induced:
Valentine's Day
Mother's Day
Boss' Day
Labor Day
There are lots of religious holidays.
(I'll not list these)
There are patriotic holidays, but some of these have been watered down, merged with others, or renamed:
President's Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day - 4th of July
Veteran's Day
VE Day + VJ Day
One can't have too many holidays. _________________ RunnerBiker ¿
