Bringing Back The Woolly Mammoth

Quote:
Scientists are talking for the first time about the old idea of resurrecting extinct species as if this staple of science fiction is a realistic possibility, saying that a living mammoth could perhaps be regenerated for as little as $10 million.

The same technology could be applied to any other extinct species from which one can obtain hair, horn, hooves, fur or feathers, and which went extinct within the last 60,000 years, the effective age limit for DNA. link

Wow, that would be a trick!!

Maybe one day...

WOW

Isn't that what they did in the dinosaur movie? Name escapes me right now.

It would be nice to be able to recover some of the extinct more recent animals.

I want them to bring back the unicorn wherever it might have left some DNA.

Yeah, like in Jurassic Park. They used the blood found in mosquitoes that were trapped in amber to bring back the Dinosaurs.

It's always science fiction before it becomes science. Wink

I'd love to see that too. Though you know some people don't even want us messing with the DNA of current critters, so we'd have to be prepared for that. But after getting past that hurdle, I think it'd be fascinating.

I agree, Sirwen, finding a unicorn, or even an animal it was based on would be so very cool. Very Happy

The closest Ive seen to a Unicorn,is a deer that was born with one horn like a Unicorn. The picture is here somewhere in the critter thread I think.

DNA from that,a White Arabian Stallion....maybe some day?? It really would be very cool. Wink

We watched a show one night about how dog breeds are made.It takes about 25 years to come up with a new dog breed, and get it right. They have now found also that the DNA of a dog has a code, that repeats it's self, and can identify where a problem is in a dog,and fix it. I would hope they could mix DNA of animals and get it right so the animal is healthy tho too. Maybe someday soon.

I remember seeing that briefly. We'll need to get well past the whole stem-cell debate first, and make sure it's done responsibly.
