Pro sports boring Runner? nothing like going to Wrigly or Fenway park and getting a hotdog snd a beer and watching the game. |
Fenway Park or Wrigley Field would be boring to me. I could care less which professional team of cry babies and drug addicts wins. I could enjoy the hot dog and the beer though.
Way back in the 60's when I was in High School in Niles, Ohio (a small town of 20,000) we had a high tech scoreboard and a stadium that would seat 25,000 plus standing room. That's 5,000 more seats than the population of the town. During a home Niles McKinley HS football game the town was shut down. You could not get gas or go to the drug store. The shops were closed so everyone could go to the game. And everyone did. Every home game was standing room only.
It was exciting and it was taken way too seriously. I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm going to predict that High School football is taken way too seriously all over the country, not just here in the south. But is is great fun and it is really exciting and it is fun to watch the kids play their best. Sometimes they screw up. Sometimes they are heros. In either case they probably get their picture in the local paper.
Now lets examine a couple of "fictional" pro baseball players. Lets assume that a pitcher is being paid $1,000,000 a year to play professional baseball. And a Batter on the other team is being paid $1,000,000.
The owners of the first have decided that the pitcher is worth a million dollars, and the owners of the second team have decided that the batter is worth a million dollars.
If I was an owner, I would expect to get my money's worth form the pitcher and batter. For a pitcher to be worth $1,000,000/year, no one should ever get a hit from him. For a batter to be worth $1,000,000/year, he should get on base (or advance the runner in the case of a sacrifice) every time he is up to bat.
If the pitcher allows batters to get hits, he obviously isn't worth the $1,000,000. If the batter doesn't do his part, then he isn't worth his salary either.
I know that pro baseball players make way more than $1,000,000. There is no way any of them are worth anywhere near what they are being paid.
The only defense for such exorbitant salaries is that the owners are not going bankrupt. _________________ RunnerBiker ¿
