There are a few quick, down and dirty scripts in gimp you can try.

On the main gimp tab (yeah, I know, it keeps going to the task bar - I've kinda learned to keep my mouse in gimp) click Xtns > Script Fu. In the drop-down list select Logos and in that dropdown list are a bunch of different scripts. Try any one of them. Type your text in the top box. You can change the font size and font in most of them.

This graphic is the logo called Alien Neon. I changed the font size to 75. The default size was way too big.
